Many people seem to think that fireplaces or more often the spare parts for them come in standard shapes and sizes. They don’t! After many years of working in this trade, even we never cease to be amazed at the sheer variety that have been designed and made over the years. Unfortunately the range of spare parts available is very limited.

The following is not a definitive list of matters to be considered but we hope it will assist you if you are thinking about purchasing a fireplace.

To avoid a wasted trip please bring along with you as much information as possible eg. The size of the chimney breast and what it is made of, the size of the opening into which you want to fit the fireplace, is there a constructional hearth (concrete or stone pad) in situ and how big is it? Is your chimney flue class 1 or 2 and is it in good working order?

***We do not usually get involved in recommendations but with this exception, we strongly recommend that you get your chimney properly swept and smoke tested to get a good indication of its condition and class before spending any money with us or anyone else. If it does need remedial work or lining it is better to know this as it will need to be sorted out before you have your fireplace fitted.
